My Favorite Photography Locations in the Monterey Area
One of the things I love most about photographing families, couples, maternity sessions, and portraits on the Monterey Peninsula is the incredible variety of landscapes we have right in our backyard. Whether you're dreaming of dramatic coastal cliffs, soft sandy beaches, or rolling dunes, there's a perfect location for every session.
Here are four of my favorite places to photograph clients and what makes each one so special.
Ribera Beach
Tucked away just south of Carmel, Ribera Beach is one of the area's hidden gems. This beach is very rocky and not great if you have a hard time walking on uneven surfaces, but the rocks in the background of the photos are gorgeous! Because it's often less crowded than some of the more well-known beaches, sessions here feel relaxed and intimate. The soft evening light makes Ribera Beach especially beautiful around sunset, creating warm, glowing images.
Carmel River State Beach
Carmel River State Beach is one of the most versatile locations on the Monterey Peninsula. Here you'll find a combination of sandy shoreline, coastal bluffs, native plants, and views where the Carmel River meets the Pacific Ocean. It's an ideal location for families, couples, and maternity sessions because there are so many scenic spots within a short walk. The sunsets here are consistently stunning, and the natural beauty of the area shines in every season. This is my favorite place for little kids and toddlers because there is so much to see and it is very safe!
Garrapata Beach
If you're looking for iconic Big Sur scenery without venturing too far south, Garrapata Beach is hard to beat. This location features dramatic cliffs, rugged rock formations, rolling hills, and expansive ocean views that create breathtaking photographs. The landscape feels adventurous and romantic, making it a favorite for engagement sessions and couples who love the outdoors. This location also works for families that want a session that is a bit more dramatic when it comes to the views.
Fort Ord National Monument
For clients who prefer a different look from the coastline, Fort Ord National Monument offers a beautiful natural setting with golden grasses, winding trails, oak trees, and rolling hills. The open landscapes provide a warm, earthy feel that's perfect for family portraits, senior sessions, and maternity photography. During golden hour, the sunlight filters through the hills and creates a soft, dreamy glow that photographs beautifully. This location lends itself to being a little warmer and less windy than my other locations. It is a great option for maternity photography as well!
